The Living Edens

salgado

Brazilian-born Sebastiao Salgado, who shoots only using Kodak film, is known for his incredibly long-term projects, which require extensive travel and extreme lifestyle changes. Workers took seven years to complete and contained images of manual laborers from 26 countries, while Migrations took six years in 43 different countries on all seven continents. Most recently Salgado completed Genesis, an ambitious eight-year project that spanned 30 trips to the world’s most pristine territories, land untouched by technology and modern life. Among Salgado’s many travels for Genesis was a two-month hike through Ethiopia, spanning 500 miles with 18 pack donkeys and their riders. In the words of Brett Abbott, a Getty Museum curator, Salgado’s approach can only be described as “epic.”

¤  The Living Edens: Manu

Directed, co-produced, co-edited and written by Kim MacQuarrie. The Living Edens: Manu is a one-hour, Emmy-winning documentary filmed entirely in the remote Manu National Park in southeastern Peru. The film chronicles a year in the lives of a variety of rainforest inhabitants: a rare Harpy Eagle family, a tree sloth, a family of six-foot-long Giant Otters, and other creatures such as a jaguar, brilliantly-plumaged macaws, and anteaters. Manu has some of the richest wildlife anywhere in the Amazon and the film’s cinematography reflects this. The film also won a major award at the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival.

¤  The Living Edens: Kamchatka

Directed, produced, written and edited by Kim MacQuarrie. «Kamchatka: Siberia’s Forbidden Wilderness» is an Emmy-winning natural history film that follows the lives of a family of Grizzly Bears (a mother and three spring cubs) as they make a living on Russia’s most remote Siberan outpost: the Kamchatka Peninsula in the far east of Russian Siberia. Part of the «Ring of Fire,» the Kamchatka Peninsula has more than 300 volcanoes, twenty nine of which are active. It also has a high concentration of spectacular wildlife, including Grizzly Bears, Steller’s Sea Eagles, Snow Sheep, Arctic Foxes an millions of Sockeye Salmon. Off of nearby Bering Island, 500-lb Northern Fur Seals dive to depths of 600 feet and gather on giant, deafening rookeries where males fight it out for territories and access to females. Tufted Puffins nest in the millions while Arctic Foxes patrol the seal rookeries, looking for unwary seal pups. Likened to Alaska as Alaska was one hundred years ago, Kamchatka hosts some of the most spectacular wildlife displays on Earth and is truly a Siberian Eden.

“It is estimated that all kinds of illegal wildlife trade in Brazil withdraw from nature almost 38 million animals every year, a business worth almost $2 billion.”

Biologist Juliana Machado Ferreira is pursuing her doctorate in Conservation Genetics at the Laboratory of Evolutionary Biology and Vertebrate Conservation (LABEC) at São Paulo University. Her current project involves developing species-specific molecular markers and population genetics studies of four passerine birds, with the aim to understand the distribution of their genetic variability and to track down the origin of birds seized from illegal trade.
She works closely with the National Fish and Wildlife Forensics Laboratory, and her ultimate goal is to help set up a Wildlife Forensics Laboratory in Brazil.

In the video, Juliana talks about her work helping to save birds and other animals stolen from the wild in Brazil. Once these animals are seized from smugglers, then what?
