Pina 3D [Wim Wenders, 2011]

Pina is a 2011 German 3D documentary film about the contemporary dance choreographer Pina Bausch. It was directed by Wim Wenders. The film premiered Out of Competition at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival.

During the preparation of the documentary, Pina Bausch died unexpectedly. Wenders cancelled the film production, but the other dancers of Tanztheater Wuppertal convinced him to make the film anyway. It showcases these dancers, who talk about Pina and perform some of her best-known pieces, inside the Tanztheater Wuppertal and in various outdoor locations around the city of Wuppertal.

spawn inside this memory again
one earthbound minute, unbent
a moment broken
softly spoken, magic
so here we are

night has thrown its heels at our door
and stormed its way in, bidden
our feet in drunken incantations, moving

happily, happily, ever after
with kisses and curses, dripped in laughter

happily, happily, would I disappear
wishes and wasted breath
at closest dreaming
so far away

counting down
in twos and in threes
with never a word, out loud
this hidden temple, decalescent, stepping

happily, happily, ever after
with kisses and curses, dripped in laughter

hurry to lay it down
where I’ve made my bed
wishes and wasted breath
at closest dreaming
so far away

as we grow
as we go
to the here and after
I’ve never forsaken you
that’s really something

so hurry to lay me down
where I’ve made my bed
tends to a wilted pale
throwing up a beat
kick it down

We are the stars which sing
We sing with our light
We are the birds of fire
We fly over the sky
Our light is a voice
We make a road for the spirit to pass over

WIM WENDERS ABOUT PINA BAUSCH .  .  .
INVENTOR OF A NEW ART FORM
No, there was no hurricane that swept across the stage, there were just … people performing
who moved differently then I knew and who moved me as I had never been moved before.
After only a few moments I had a lump in my throat, and after a few minutes of unbelieving amazement
I simply let go of my feelings and cried unrestrainedly.
This had never happened to me before… maybe in life, sometimes in the cinema,
but not when watching a rehearsed production, let alone choreography.
This was not theatre, nor pantomime, nor ballet and not at all opera.
Pina is, as you know, the creator of a new art.
Dance theatre.
MOVEMENT

Until now movement as such has never touched me. I always regarded it as a given. One just moves. Everything moves. Only through Pina’s Tanztheater have I learned to value movements, gestures, attitudes, behaviour, body language, and through her work learned to respect them. And anew every time when, over the years I saw Pina’s pieces, many times and again, did I relearn, often like being struck by thunder, that the simplest and most obvious is the most moving at all:

What treasure lies within our bodies, to be able to express itself without words,
and how many stories can be told without saying a single sentence.
